Class 3 2017 - 2018

Mr Fowler

Welcome back and Happy New Year to you all.

Some forthcoming dates for your diary:

26th January – Mid-year reports out

8th February – Year 3 trip to Chester Zoo (a separate letter will be sent out about this)

16th February – Last day of half-term

12th February – Enterprise Week

27th February – Return to school

Literacy

This half-term, the children will be learning about traditional poetry, concentrating on the poems of Robert Louis Stevenson, with the focus being for them to write a poem using rhyming couplets. They will also be exploring the book “The Day I Swapped my Dad for Two Goldfish” by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, learning about adverbials and recounts using past tense and first person and chronological order. They will go on to write a new version of “The Diary of a Killer Cat”, by Anne Fine, using recount features and complex sentences.

Numeracy

For the first three weeks, the children will re-visit multiplication and division to ensure that they have a solid understanding of the short multiplication and division methods. They will then move onto looking at adding and subtracting money and ultimately how to calculate how much change they would receive from £5 and £10, if they went into a shop and bought a number of items.

Science

In Science, the children will learn about food groups and healthy balanced diets. They will be studying the human digestive system and how food is transported around the body, investigating skeletons and looking closely at bones, joints and muscles and comparing it with animal skeletons.

Computing

The children will continue to learn about coding using a programme called Scratch. This is a free programme and can be downloaded at home, if the children want to continue their learning outside of school. As it is internet safety day in February, the children will also receive a number of lessons on keeping safe online.

Forest Schools

For this half-term, the children will participate in Forest Schools. This is an activity that is carried out in the school grounds. The children will ideally need old, warm clothes to be brought in for every Wednesday.

PE

Due to Forest Schools, for this half-term only, the children will only receive one PE lesson per week. This will take place on Thursdays when an external coach will take the children through a number of games to improve their cricket skills. The children will need trainers and warm clothes as a lot of the activities will be outdoors.

Homework

Both Literacy and Numeracy homework will continue to be sent home on Fridays and returned back by Wednesday the following week. I will also endeavour to hand out the weekly spellings on the Tuesday ready for the test on the following Monday.

Finally a big thank you to all those who gave me a present for Christmas. The kind gestures were really appreciated.

If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to come in and see me.
