Miss Garner

Year 1

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome back after a lovely 2 weeks holiday, I hope you all had a relaxing break. We are now in are final term together, I can’t believe it is coming to an end.

Just a few upcoming dates for your diary:

Monday 16th April – School opens

Friday 27th April – FOHS Bingo night

Thursday 3rd May – Year 1 Phonics meeting 3:30pm

Monday 7th May – School closed (Bank Holiday)

Tuesday 22nd May – FOHS Film night

Thursday 24th May – Last day of half term

Monday 4th June – First day back

This half term our topic is going to be ‘Pirates’. In Literacy we are going to be exploring the texts ‘Pirates love underpants’, ‘Class three all at sea’ and ‘The night pirates’. We are going to be looking at creating an alternative ending to some of the stories and looking at the different features in an adventure story. At the end of the half term the children are going to be creating their own adventure stories. We are going to be working on the children’s abilities to check their own work and make sure that they have included all of the features of a good writer in year 1. This includes capital letters; full stops; finger spaces; wow words (adjectives); conjunctions (and, because, so, or); punctuation (? ! “” , ).

In Maths we are going to be working on multiplication and division and then fractions. The children need to know their 10’s, 5’s and 2 timetables confidently, so practicing these at home would be great.

During our Topic work we will be exploring world maps and atlases, looking closely at the UK and our countries and capital cities. To keep with our pirate theme we will be looking at the seas and where we could sail too as pirates. We will also be thinking in Science about floating and sinking, looking at materials that float and sink and also the animals that live under the sea. This will lead onto our D&T work of designing and making our own pirate ships. In order for all children to do this, please could I kindly ask that any boxes, bottles or junk material that the children could use for their ships is donated to school? The items they bring in will not necessarily be used for their own boats but the items can be shared between all of the children.

PE will continue to take place on Tuesdays and Wednesday’s every week. As the weather starts to warm up we will be beginning to do PE outside so that the children can begin to prepare for sports day.

As you can see on the dates I have provided above I have allocated a day for Year 1 parents to come to school and get some more information about the Phonics Screening test that the children have to take in the next half term. Please feel free to come along if you want more information or have any questions. To support your children in the meantime please continue to listen to your child read making sure they are recognising sounds in words. Phonics homework is also going to be sent out from now until the screening test.

If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact me. My door is always open!
