Summer half term 1

Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely Easter break and are looking forward to another action packed half-term in Year One! Below we have outlined some of the activities that we will be undertaking this half term:

Our new topic for this half-term is called “Watch out! Dragons about!”

In Literacy, we will begin by reading “The Odd Egg!” by Emily Gravett before moving on to “Tell Me a Dragon” by Jackie Morris and “George and the Dragon” by Chris Wormell. We will continue to develop our independence to write a sequence of sentences with capital letters and full stops as well as reinforce correct letter formation by sitting our letters on the lines with clear ascenders and descenders.

In DT, we will be designing and creating our own castles from cardboard boxes.

In Topic lessons, we will be learning about the countries which make up the United Kingdom as well as traditions and stories associated with them.

In Science, we will be learning about growing plants and hopefully brightening up our outside area with some of our creations!

We will continue with the Sketch Nation app in Computing lessons and design some games for Foundation children to play with us.

In PE, our focus will be tennis on Tuesdays with Mrs Hughes and benchball or skittle ball on Fridays with Mrs Bradley. Most PE lessons will be outside this half term so please could you send in appropriate, outdoor PE kits as well as trainers. Please could you also ensure that all uniform is labelled and checked regularly and be aware that for health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons.

In Numeracy, the children will be learning more about place value and then moving onto measuring.

Homework will continue to be practical and fun and will be given out on a Friday. Please could you check that folders are in the children’s school bags so that they can be handed in on or before Wednesday of the following week.

Thank you for your continued support with your children’s reading. It is lovely to see so many children enjoying their reading and consequently making fantastic progress! This half term, we will be changing our spelling homework to coincide with a new whole school approach so will no longer have spelling tests on a Monday. Instead, we will be sending home handwriting books to practise “tricky words” that the children have spelt incorrectly in their independent writing, alongside our weekly phonics pattern.

We hope this is helpful and look forward to another enjoyable half term! Please do not hesitate to pop in and see us if you have any questions or queries. Our door is always open!
