Miss Garner

Year 1

Welcome Back and a very Happy New Year! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. Thank you so very much for my lovely gifts you got me at the end of last term. It was very much appreciated.

A few dates for your diary:

26th January – Mid-year reports

16th February – Last day of half term

27th February – First day back to school

Literacy

This half-term we will be focusing our topic on ‘Once upon a time’ based on the story ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’. We are going to be doing a lot of investigating around the story and getting children to think more deeply about the story structure. Children are going to be looking more closely at non-fiction and how this differs from fictions stories. We will continue to work on our phonics and apply this in our writing and Guided reading.

Maths

For the first few weeks we are going to be looking at shapes. Children are going to understand what a 3D shape and a 2D shape are and how they are different. They will be learning the correct terminology for each and applying their knowledge in practical activities. Following on from this, we are going to be moving back to numbers but working with numbers 0-50.

Science

In science, the children are going to be looking at Everyday Materials. We will be identifying different materials we have in our environments and understanding some of their properties. We will be carrying out an experiment near the end of the half term to see what material would be best to keep baby bear dry from the rain.

Computing

This half term the children are going to have the opportunity to use the Ipads in class. We will be using programming apps where the children can programme objects to move around the screen. (I will keep you updated on the apps we are going to be using if you have a device at home you would like to download it onto)

PE

This half term PE will take place on a Wednesday and a Thursday again. Please could the children bring their PE kits in on a Monday and they will be coming home on the Thursday.

Homework

Homework will continue to be given out on a Friday (Literacy, Maths and Spellings) where the Literacy and Maths is due in on the Wednesday and the spellings are practiced ready for the following Friday.

In addition, we have had a sort out of spare clothes in school and are eager to top it up. Please could I ask if you have any spare clothes (T.shirts, jumpers, trousers, leggings, skirts) would you kindly donate them to school for our spare clothes bag. This would be kindly appreciated.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to speak to me at school or drop me an email s.garner@highfieldsnantwich.cheshire.sch.uk.
