Class 1 2023 - 2024

Mrs Hughes

Mrs Bradley

Year 1 ( Spring half term 2 )

This half term, our topic is ‘Home Sweet Home’ which we are sure the children will enjoy!

In Literacy, we will be using “The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth” to inspire our writing which will also tie in with World Book Day on Thursday 7th March. We will continue to work on letter formation, sitting our “descenders” on the lines with their tails hanging below and checking our “ascenders” like b.d,h,k,l and t are taller. We will be developing our independence to write a sequence of sentences with capital letters and full stops, continue to use our phonic sounds to help spell new words and read our own work out loud to check that it makes sense.

In History lessons, we will be learning about our home town, Nantwich and the events of the great fire that burned in 1583.

In Art, we will look at the work of LS Lowry before printing black and white houses. We will then design and make our own 3D black and white houses in Design and Technology lessons. (For this, we will need boxes for each child. Teabag boxes are ideal as they are not too big and can be cut easily by the children. Details to follow).

Numeracy lessons will develop our knowledge of place value and numbers to 50 as well as practical applications such as measuring length, mass and capacity.  We will continue to send home games or provide links to on-line apps to reinforce our classwork. Thank you for uploading your homework on to Tapestry. It really is lovely to share in your learning! Homework as before will be set on Fridays and is due to be uploaded on to Tapestry by Wednesday of the following week.

Our Science lessons will involve investigating different materials and making games using magnets.

There will be two sessions of PE this half-term which will be on Mondays with Mrs Hughes and on Wednesdays with Mrs Bradley. This half term, we will be developing our gymnastic as well as team building skills. Please could you be aware that for health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons and we will be getting changed into our PE kits at school. Please could you check that all PE kit as well as other items of school uniform are still clearly labelled as this does make it easier for us to match up any lost clothing with its owner?

R.E will be taught by Mrs Walker on Thursday mornings during Mrs Bradley’s PPA time which this half term will focus on the Easter Story.

Thank you very much for your continued support with your children’s reading. It has been wonderful to see the children progress and become more confident! Remember little and often is best! Reading to your child and talking about stories is so beneficial and develops their vocabulary and knowledge of books, especially when they are tired after a busy day! Any time snuggling up with a book is time well spent!

If you have any questions or queries no matter what they are, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do my best to help in any way we can. Our email addresses are
