Spring half term 2

Welcome back to what will definitely be a very busy half term! It’s hard to believe that we have now passed the half-way point of the year! How time flies!

Below we have outlined some of the activities that we will be undertaking this half term:

Our new topic for this half-term has a pets theme and is called “Paws, Claws and Whiskers.”

In Literacy, we will begin by reading "Oi Dog!" by Kes Gray and “Pig the Pug” by Aaron Blabey. We will continue to develop our independence to write a sequence of sentences with capital letters and full stops as well as reinforce correct letter formation by sitting our letters on the lines with clear ascenders and descenders.

In Art, we will be creating our own pet collages in the style of Denise Fiedler, using different types of paper.

In Science, we will be exploring outside and looking at different habitats.  We will find out what humans and animals need to survive.  We will also carry out a science experiment, investigating the most absorbent papers should any pets have a little accident at home!

We will continue with the pet theme in Computing lessons by creating our own games using the Sketch Nation app.

In Topic lessons, we will learn about where we live and our local area. We will look at our own addresses, use Google Earth to find our houses and make simple maps and find out about some of the features of Nantwich.

In PE, our focus will be cricket on Tuesdays with Ben, our cricket development officer. Cricket lessons will be mainly outside so please could you send in warm, outdoor PE kits as well as trainers. Please could you also ensure that all uniform is labelled and checked regularly and be aware that for health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons.

We will also have Forest School on Wednesday afternoons with Miss Garner. For these sessions, the children will need warm, waterproof clothing with two pairs of socks and wellies as they will be outside, whatever the weather!

In Numeracy, the children will be learning more about addition and subtraction, place value and then moving onto measuring.

Homework will continue to be practical and fun and will be given out on a Friday. Please could you check that folders are in the children’s school bags so that they can be handed in on or before Wednesday of the following week.

Thank you for your continued support with your children’s reading. Reading regularly really does make a difference and helps to develop fluency, understanding and decoding skills. As a school, we recommend reading at least three times a week and recording this in the reading diaries. Thank you also for helping to raise money with our recent sponsored read. As a result, we will be able to add more phonics based reading books to our reading scheme book boxes which we are presently in the process of updating. We will also be having a Year 1 phonics meeting to share strategies and alleviate any worries about the Year 1 Phonics Check which takes place in June on Monday 4th March at 3.45pm

We hope this is helpful and look forward to an action-packed half term! Please do not hesitate to pop in and see us if you have any questions or queries. Our door is always open!
