Class 1 2018 - 2019

Mrs Hughes

Mrs Bradley

Welcome back!  We hope that you have had a lovely summer and we look forward to hearing about all of your adventures.

There has been a lot of activity over the summer at Highfields and the first few weeks will be a little different as we get the school back to looking pretty!

With this in mind, our new topic will be “Into the Woods”.  We will begin by reading “Stick Man” by Julia Donaldson and try to help him find his way around the school grounds and our new building as he does have a habit of getting lost!

In Topic lessons, we will become more familiar with our new surroundings. We will use the iPads to take photographs, find Stick Man using simple maps, add features to them and try to give Stick Man directions so that he does not get lost again!

In Art, we will learn how to create bark and leaf rubbings as well as print using leaves before creating textured collages of Stick Man’s family tree and our own versions of Stick Man. We will also use our school grounds to make natural sculptures like Andy Goldsworthy and maybe introduce a few Forest school activities in order to make a home for Stick Man and develop our problem solving skills in preparation for computer programming later in the year.

In Literacy, we will use “Stick Man” to inspire our writing before moving on to “Stanley’s Stick” by John Hegley. Our main focus over the first few weeks will be to form our letters correctly and sit them on the lines with any tails hanging below. We will also be reinforcing finger spaces between words as well as using capital letters to begin ideas and full stops to end them.

Our Science lessons will be based around Seasonal Changes and we will be going outside to look at the weather and practising being weather reporters! We will also look at how we can look after our school environment and create rules for a happy classroom in Life Education lessons. The Life Education Van, along with Gerald the Giraffe, will be visiting us on the 8th and 9th of October.

Our Numeracy lessons will begin by focusing on sorting, counting and one more and one less.  We really want the learning in year 1 to be fun and sometimes we will send games home as the homework.  With the games, there is nothing for you to record and they don’t have to be sent back to school, we just want you to enjoy numbers and play and practise at home together.

In Music, we will be learning some simple songs based around a theme called “Hey You!”

PE will be on a Tuesday and a Wednesday in year 1 this half-term. On Tuesday, the children will be practising their throwing, catching and aiming skills with Mrs Hughes as well as learning how to play dodgeball. On Wednesdays, Mrs Bradley and Mr Gibbons will be developing the children’s co-ordination and spatial awareness with a range of multi-skills lessons.

This half-term, the children will require trainers for multi-skills as this will take place outside. Trainers or pumps can be worn for indoor games such as dodgeball. Later in the year, pumps or bare feet are required for gymnastics or dance. Please could you ensure that all uniform is labelled and checked regularly in case names wear away. For health and safety reasons, earrings must be removed or covered during PE lessons.

R.E. as well as French will be taught by Mrs Hayes on Wednesday afternoons after lunch during Mrs Bradley’s PPA time.

Homework, as in Foundation, will be given out on a Friday and is due in by the Wednesday of the following week. In addition, spellings of keywords will be given out on a Tuesday ready for a test on the following Monday. It is very important that the children continue to read regularly at home in order to build up their reading miles and develop their fluency and sight recognition. Little and often is best! Reading to your child and talking about stories is also beneficial and develops their vocabulary and love for books, especially when they are tired after a busy day!

We hope this is helpful and look forward to working with you and your children and meeting you all properly.

If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our door is always open!
