Welcome back!

I hope you all had an enjoyable summer and I can’t wait to hear all about it! I have planned some fun and exciting activities for our first few weeks back.

As you may know, things are a little bit different in school at the moment but please do not worry as you will soon get used to our new routines and it will all feel very normal, very quickly!

Every day please bring the following items into school with you:

  • Coat (in case it rains)
  • Lunch box (if you are not having a school lunch)
  • Morning snack (This is very important as our lunchtime is half 12)
  • Water bottle
  • Book bag

Below, I have included some key information regarding the first half term in year 2:

 Numeracy lessons will be based on broadening our knowledge of place value. We will first be looking at reading and writing numbers to 100; in words and numerals. We will then move onto recognising numbers and understanding the composition of two digit and three-digit numbers. In Year 2, we are aiming to keep Numeracy practical and engaging, so in some weeks I may send home numeracy games for homework.

Literacy will be animal themed this half term, to link with our Science topic. Firstly we will be reading the book Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson. Then we will be exploring traditional tales of some the brilliant fables, for example, The Frog and the Scorpion and The Ant and the Grasshopper.

In Topic lessons, we will become more familiar with surroundings of Nantwich and the British Isles. We will be using a range of equipment such as iPads, maps, atlases and globes to broaden our geographical knowledge. We will be using some great apps such as Google Earth and Pic Collage to help us complete our work.

Our Science lessons will focus on the children learning about a variety of habitats and the plants and animals that live there. They will learn to tell the difference between things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive, and apply this in a range of contexts. Along the way, they will make observations of a local habitat and the creatures that live there, investigating conditions in local microhabitats and how they affect the minibeasts found within them.

During the Autumn 1 term, we will be having Forest School with Miss Garner on Wednesday afternoons. Please wear the appropriate outdoor clothing for any weather. Whatever the weather we will be outside all afternoon, so it is important to look at the weather forecast and dress appropriately for the day. If you are unsure what to wear, please feel to ask.

Our PE lesson will be on Friday afternoons. Please wear your Highfields Academy red top with black shorts/track suit bottoms (depending on the weather) with trainers. Children may bring a jumper to wear too.

For both Forest School and PE, please can children come into school in their kits on their designated days.

Homework, as in Year 1, will be given out on a Friday and is due in by the Wednesday of the following week..

It is very important that the children continue to read regularly at home, as this builds up their fluency and will continue to build on their comprehension skills. Please remember to record any reading completed at home in your child/children’s reading diary.  To develop your child/children’s thirst for books, reading to your child and discussing stories develops their range of vocabulary and their love for books.
