Class 2 2017 - 2018

Mrs Bradley

Spring half term 1

Welcome back after the Christmas holidays. Hope you all had a lovely time and thank you very much for the presents!

Below we have outlined some of the activities that we will be undertaking this half term:

Our new topic for this half-term is based around “The Great Fire of London”!

In Topic lessons, we will begin by learning about London, its famous landmarks and what makes it a city. We will act out the story of the Great Fire, find out who was involved as well as why the fire lasted so long. We will compare how fire-fighting has changed through time. We will also be “history detectives” and use paintings and the diary of Samuel Pepys to find out clues about the event before writing our own versions!

In Design and Technology, we will be designing and making our own emergency vehicles, complete with moving axles and wheels. Please could you send in a small box for your child which will act as the base of the vehicle, preferably no bigger than a small teabag box! We will also be developing our knowledge of materials and their suitability in Science.

In Literacy lessons, we will writing poems, stories and recounts. We will begin by writing of own version of “London’s Burning,” before recreating “The Gingerbread Man” and writing recounts.

In PE, our focus will be gymnastics and cricket. We will be developing our rolls, balances, turns and jumps using low level apparatus alongside Mr Gibbons on Wednesdays. We will then be developing our cricket skills on Thursdays with Ben, our cricket development officer. The children will need pumps or bare feet for gymnastics in the hall. Trainers are required for games such as cricket as well as warm clothes as most of these sessions will take place outdoors. Please can you check that PE kits are in school all week in case days change and that all PE kit is clearly labelled as names may have faded or fallen off?

Mrs Hayes will teach the children R.E. and French on Wednesday afternoons.

In Computing, we will be continuing coding by programming and moving characters using the “Daisy the Dino” and “Hopscotch” apps before. Life Education lessons focus on “Keeping Safe” leading up to “Safer Internet Day” on Tuesday 6th February.

Numeracy lessons will focus on multiplication and division and we will continue to reinforce all of the work that we have done so far on addition and subtraction.

Music lessons will include lots of singing and introducing the children to instruments in our unit called ‘I Wanna Play in a Band’!

Please do not hesitate to come to see us if you have any questions. Our door is always open!
