Class 2 2017 - 2018

Mrs Bradley

Summer half term 1

Welcome back to a very busy and important half term! Hope you all had a lovely Easter break and are ready for our last term together! How time flies!

Below we have outlined some of the activities that we will be undertaking this half term:

Our learning for this half-term has a woodland theme. In Literacy, we will begin by looking at the story “Little Red Riding Hood” and compare it with “Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion” by Alex T. Smith. We will retell stories, write about character’s plans, describe journeys and create wanted posters.

In Science, we will be identifying and classifying plants and animals in the school grounds, looking at what plants and animals need to survive as well as researching and creating food chains.

During Mrs Bradley’s PPA time on Wednesday afternoons, the children will be having Forest School sessions. Please could you ensure that they have warm, waterproof clothing each Wednesday as they will be outside for these sessions whatever the weather.

In Topic lessons, we will be learning about the royal family as there are many royal celebrations later this half term. We will be learning about the Queen and her duties. We will place some key events on the Queen’s timeline and compare her wedding day with Harry and Meghan’s. We will also act out her Coronation and look at how technology has changed since the first televised Coronation.

In Design and Technology, we will be designing and making our own cupcakes or savoury party food such as mini-pizzas or tarts. With this in mind, please could you let us know if your child has any food allergies.

In PE, our focus will be tennis on Mondays. We will also be developing our athletic skills on Fridays. The children will require trainers for both sessions as well as outdoor kit.

In ICT, we will be using GarageBand to make our own music!

In Music, we will continue to learn how to play the recorder.  Please could you ensure that the children bring their recorders and music folders each on Monday in preparation for the Tuesday! Lessons do need to change at short notice so if they could always have it with them on the Monday that would be very helpful.

Finally in Numeracy, we will be revisiting place value, missing number problems, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions as well as learning to read a variety of scales on thermometers and other measuring containers.

We hope this is helpful and gives you an insight into our topics this half term! As mentioned at parents evening, this half term the children will complete their end of key stage 1 tests in reading comprehension, numeracy and spelling and grammar. The children have all come a long way and we are proud of every child’s journey to this point! In order for the children to really show what they can do, we will try to keep our routines as calm and normal as possible and encourage the children throughout! Please could you help your child by continuing to read regularly and talk about the texts each evening. We will send a reading comprehension home as part of their homework in order to practise and reinforce their retrieval skills. We have been encouraging the children to find and underline clues or keywords in the texts to help them answer the questions rather than just guess or try to remember!

We have had increasing requests to separate talking partners and to keep children away from each other.  We change talking partners each half term so that the children develop new friends and work with children that they wouldn’t ordinarily choose to work or play with.  It is very important that the children learn how to deal with a range of people from an early age.  As they grow up they will come across people in social and work situations that are different to themselves.  In life we have to learn the skills to get on with a range of people.  The children are closely monitored in the classroom and a high standard of behaviour is expected.

Please do not hesitate to come to see us if you have any questions. Our door is always open!
